Elkview Tammy, Keystone Futurity Overall Winner

(September 17, 2010) Deb Taylor of Union City, Pennsylvania found her silver lining in the clouds in edging out the competition on a cool, overcast Friday, to become the overall winner of the Keystone Draft Horse futurity held September 17, 2010 at the Crawford County fairgrounds in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Elkview Tammy, a Percheron mare owned by Kendall Strawn & Deb Taylor and bred by Elkview Percherons, Gordon & Ross Joseph of Elkhorn, Manitoba emerged victorious at the close of the day-long event to earn her owners a $3910.91 paycheck.

It proved to be a tight competition with mere points separating the first three placings at the end of the day. Elkview Tammy consistently placed in all three divisions which proved to be the key to her 1 st place overall finish. She scored third in her halter class, a fifth in the rail class, and seventh in the pattern class. Scoring was by way of a panel judging system, and when the points were tallied, Tammy had secured enough to put her right into the winner’s circle.

Any foal purchased from the Keystone Colt Sale held in conjunction with the futurity, and paid into the futurity at the time of sale, is eligible to return to compete in the Keystone Draft Horse Futurity as a 2-year old, and to compete for the total futurity purse. To date, equine ranchers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan have consigned foals to this sale held in Meadville, PA. The total purse consists of nomination fees paid by the consigning breeders as well as NAERIC, along with the futurity fees paid by the colt buyers at the time of the sale.

Judges for the futurity event were Mr. Mark Barie of East Bethany, NY, Mr. Jason Honsberger of Defiance, Ohio and Mr. Ryan Mullen of Parkersburg, West Virginia. The first division was the halter or line class. When the points were tallied, Bridgeman’s Vance, a Belgian gelding bred by Kevin and Julie Bridgeman of Binscarth, Manitoba and owned by Kathy Cullum was sitting in first place. In the second portion of the futurity, Wadella Doc’s Kurt, a Percheron gelding owned and shown by Barry Gregg and bred by Wade and Ella Joorisity of Kipling, Saskatchewan emerged victorious on the rail. There were some strong showings in the individual pattern class, that demonstrated how well broke these young horses were. Northern Lights Scarlett, a Belgian mare bred by Gene and Paula Conrad of St. Alphonse, Manitoba and owned and shown by Jonathan Miller of Millersburg, Ohio was first in the pattern. At the end of the day and after the smoke had cleared, it was consistency in all three divisions that proved successful for Deb Taylor and Elkview Tammy.

The high selling foal of the sale was a Belgian colt, Creek Side Victory, consigned by Tom Lane of Birtle, Manitoba, and purchased by Samuel A. King of Lititz, PA for $6000.00. High selling Percheron foal honors were shared by Jim & Darlene Lane of Birtle, Manitoba for Lone Oak 10 Gaye purchased by Brian Monteith of Embro, Ontario, and Kent and Marnie Anderson of Pilot Mound, Manitoba for Charleswood Logan’s J.R., purchased by this year’s futurity winners, Kendall Strawn and Deb Taylor for $2500. The top Clydesdale, Boulder Bluff Jewels, was consigned by Blaine and Trinda Martin of Strathclair, Manitoba, and was sold to Janet Kirik of Union City, PA for $1050.00, and high-selling Spotted Draft, Warkentin’s Spotted Zeke, was offered on purchase by Rob and Marilyn Warkentin of Virden, Manitoba, and was purchased by Heidi Scheerbaum of West Sunbury, PA for $1000. There were 47 lots sold for an average of $1105.

The excitement in Pennsylvania continues to build, and the competition grows stronger with each passing year which was evident with the record turn out of 2-year olds at this year’s futurity. With events such as the Keystone Draft Horse Futurity and Keystone Colt Sale to showcase Canadian-bred draft horses, the promotion of draft horses in North America is proving to be stronger than ever.
